Meet the Team

Dr Shelagh Malham (Project Director) is a Reader in Marine Biology at Bangor University. Dr Malham has extensive shellfish related research experience with expertise in shellfish disease, microbial water quality and current ecological processes and functions which govern shellfish health. As NOAR project director Dr Malham will be responsible for all aspects of project delivery.

Dr Nick Jones (co-lead WP 2, 3, 4, & 5) is a post-doctoral researcher with over 20 years’ experience in molluscan biology, animal husbandry, sustainable aquaculture production, hatchery design and construction. Dr Jones has worked both alongside and within the commercial aquaculture industry and has been a leading contributor to various EU-funded aquaculture projects.

Dr Tom Galley (co-lead WP 2, 3, 4, & 5) is a post-doctoral researcher with over 15 years’ experience in temperate and tropical marine aquaculture research and innovation. Experienced in the design and construction of research hatchery facilities, animal husbandry, and working alongside industry stakeholders. Dr Galley has taken a leading role in a number of previous EU funded aquaculture projects, including those focused on the innovation and optimisation of hatchery production of commercially important bivalve species.

Robin Love is a Research Project Support Officer at the Centre for Applied Marine Sciences. Since graduating from Bangor University in 2015 he has worked in the aquaculture industry monitoring harmful plankton blooms and overseeing fish stock health. Robin also has several years’ experience in marine animal husbandry techniques and animal welfare protocols.

Dr David Smyth (co-lead WPs 1&4) is a post-doctoral researcher who has had leading roles in previous projects focusing on the restoration of compromised shellfish stocks in the UK and the Persian Gulf. Dr Smyth is a leading researcher within Europe on the field of population dynamics, settlement substrates and stock enhancement strategies for the Native oyster Ostrea edulis. He is also an active member on the Zoological Society’s Native Oyster Restoration Network for UK and Ireland and the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance of Europe.

Dr Kata Farkas (co-lead of WP6) is post-doctoral researcher and a highly experienced environmental virologist, with extensive experience in aquatic microbiology and virology, viral detection, quantification and ecology and molecular method development for microbe/virus identification. Dr Farkas is also currently a research scientist on the ERDF funded Shellfish Centre where her main research goal is to understand the fate and behaviour of enteric viruses in aquatic environment and in shellfish.

Professor Lewis Le Vay (co-lead WP1& 7 and project oversight) is the Director of the Centre for Applied Marine Sciences (CAMS) at Bangor University. He also has a long track record of over 30 years aquaculture research and innovation, often working closely with industry and regulators.
